Indians fly, fly away against Canadians

SPOKANE, WA - Indians' players Cody Podraza and Vincent DiFazio apparently thought it was still the Fourth of July when they provided fireworks by hitting two home runs over the left field fence to give the Indians a 4-0 victory over the Vancouver Canadians Sunday night at Avista Stadium.

After another stellar night of pitching by both clubs, the score was 0-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning. After shortstop Joe Bonadonna reached first base on a single, Podraza sent a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to put the Indians up 2-0. Later that inning, with Tommy Mendonca on second, DiFazio sent a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence to extend the Indians lead to 4-0.

Bonadonna finished the night 2-for-4 with two singles. Both Podraza and DiFazio finished with one home run and two RBIs.

Indians starting pitcher Robbie Ross went five innings, allowing just three hits while striking out ten Canadians batters, an amazing two strikeouts per inning. Coming into the game, the lefty led the Northwest League in strikeouts with 24. Kyle Ocampo and Justin King provided four innings of relief out of the Indians bullpen, allowing a combined one hit while striking out five. King picked up the win, his first of the season.

The Indians return to Avista Stadium tomorrow for the third game of the five-game homestand. Tomorrow night is Fish & Wildlife Night presented by the Regional Council of Carpenters and KIX 96.1 FM. Tickets are still available for tomorrow night by calling the Spokane Indians Ticket Office at 343-OTTO (6886), 1-800-325-SEAT, or by visiting
