CHENEY, Wash. - The Eastern Washington University men's basketball program has nearly completed its roster for the 2009-10 season with the addition of five players who are expected to attend EWU this fall and play for the Eagles and head coach Kirk Earlywine. Earlywine made the announcement on Tuesday (June 16) and said one more player will soon be added to the roster.

The new players include freshman 6-foot guard Sean Fischer, a 2009 graduate of Gonzaga Prep in Spokane. A first team All-Greater Spokane League selection as a senior, Fischer averaged 12.8 points in leading the Bullpups to a fourth-place finish at the WIAA State 4A Tournament. He closed his career with 21 points -- all after halftime -- in a 72-64 overtime win over Inglemoor that capped Gonzaga Prep's 26-4 season.

Glenn Dean, a 2008 graduate of Seattle's Roosevelt High School, will also join EWU as a freshman. The 5-10 guard spent one season at the Laurinburg Institute preparatory school in North Carolina.

The other three players are junior college transfers, including a pair of sophomores-to-be from Los Angles Southwest College -- Laron Griffin and Tremayne Johnson. Both from Los Angeles, Griffin is a 2007 graduate of Manual Arts High School and Johnson graduated the same year from Artesia High School.

Another newcomer is Alden Gibbs, a 6-3 junior guard from College of the Siskyous in California who graduated in 2007 from Canarsie High School in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Earlywine had previously announced the addition of four other players, but just one - Jeffrey Forbes out of Federal Way, Wash., High School -- met academic standards to be able to begin playing at EWU this next season.

The seven total newcomers will join five returning letter winners (Benny Valentine, Brandon Moore, Mark Dunn, Gary Gibson and Matthew Brunell) and 2008-09 redshirts Kevin Winford and Abebe Demissie on this year's roster.

Among the new players, Johnson was perhaps the most sought-after as he was recruited by San Francisco and Arizona. He averaged nine points and five rebounds as a freshman at L.A. Southwest then redshirted as a sophomore.

In addition, Gibbs was a California Community College Athletic Association first team All-State selection at College of the Siskyous in the 2008-09 season. He averaged 17.0 points with a high game of 32 as a sophomore, to go along with averages of 11.1 rebounds and 3.8 steals per game to rank second in the CCCAA. He had 150 offensive rebounds and more than 40 dunks. He averaged 13.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.5 steals as a freshman. He led the school to a 22-12 record in 2008-09 after a 9-20 finish the year before.
