NEW YORK - University of Washington star junior softball pitcher Danielle Lawrie is among five finalists for the Honda-Broderick Cup, which is the collegiate woman athlete of the year award.

The 5-foot-7 right-hander from Langley, British Columbia, was the national college softball player of the year and pitched the Huskies to their first NCAA softball championship this month at Oklahoma City.

The other finalists are UConn basketball star Renee Montgomery, Colorado's Jennifer Barringer (track and field), Penn State's Nicole Fawcett (volleyball) and Georgia's Courtney Kupets (gymnastics).

The five finalists were chosen from the 12 Honda Sports Award winners. The winner will be announced next Monday at Columbia University in New York. Softball great Lisa Fernandez will present the award. Fernandez won the Honda-Broderick Cup in 1993.
