Gonzaga crew finishes 5th on opening day; coach disappointed

Posted: Updated:

Despite finishing fifth in the morning heat race at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta on Thursday, coach Dan Gehn sid he was disappointed in how his Varsity8+ got things started.

The Varsity 8+ team placed fifth in the first race, then third in the repachage race later in the afternoon.  The team faced four squads ranked in the top 15 in the latest IRA coaches poll.  Harvard, ranked highest at No. 3, won the opening 2000m race with a time of 5:54.20, followed by Brown University (No. 6), Syracuse (No. 11), and Dartmouth (No. 14).  The Bulldogs finished just ahead of San Deigo.

In the repachage race, The Zags led Navy into the second 500-meters.  Navy pushed back, and then Gonzaga pushed back.  Navy's last push pushed them over the line first and the Zags settled for third place.

Gonzaga's second Varsity 8+ team also placed fifth and was scheduled to race again on Friday.

The Zags' Freshman 8+ crew finished in sixth place behind Oregon State and was also scheduled to race again on Friday.
