The Seattle Times reported Tuesday that Washington State defensive end Cory Mackay could be back in classes in Pullman by next fall if all goes well.

Mackay, a redshirt freshman from Redmond, Wash. was hospitalized after rolling his pickup truck outside of Washtucna last month. Witnesses said he fell asleep behind the wheel while on his way home after taking the last of his final exams.

After the crash, Mackay was taken first to a hospital in Tri-Cities, but then flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he had surgery to fuse two vertebrae.

Mackay is due to return home to Redmond on June 10.  The redshirt freshman's father told the newspaper he'll have to wear a body cast for about two months after he gets home.  After that, he'll undergo more physical therapy.

Doctors said Mackay's spinal cord wasn't significantly damaged.
