Michelle Coombs of the Eastern Washington University track and field team will compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Championships from June 10-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.

Coombs, a freshman from Hermiston, Ore., received an at-large berth to the Championships. She will compete in the preliminaries of the javelin on June 10 at 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time. The finals will be on June 12 at 3:30 p.m.

"I am looking for a solid performance from her," said head women's track and field coach Marcia Mecklenburg. "It will be interesting to see how she responds as a freshman. I think right now the goal is for her to do well and be consistent and hopefully get into the finals."

To qualify for the finals, an athlete must place in the top 12 in the preliminaries. More information on the event, including results and schedule, may be found at: http://www.arkansasrazorbacks.com/

Coombs is making her first appearance at the national level. She is currently ranked 21st in the javelin with a throw of 163-1 set when she won the Big Sky Conference title. That throw ranks her third in school history. She went on to finish sixth at the NCAA West Regionals from May 29-30 in Eugene, Ore., with a throw of 153-4.

Eastern has had only two female All-American athletes at the NCAA Division I level (indoors and outdoors). Carolee Gutierrez in the javelin (161-10) to finish fourth in 2007 and Kari McKay in the 10,000 (35:18.15) with a fourth-place finish in 1992. The top eight American finishers at the meet earn All-America status.
