Long jump record set at state; LC, NC leaders at state meet

TACOMA, Wash. - Junior Ben Ternan of W.F. West set a Class 2A state meet long jump record yesterday in the opening day of the Washington state prep track and field championships in Tacoma.

Ternan unleashed a jump of 23-03.00 feet, nearly two feet farther than second-place Phillip Puccino of Steilacoom with 21-07.00. The previous record, set by Grant Ashton of Pullman in 2006, was 22-10.25.

After day one, Joel Ferris High led the boys' 4A competition with 12 points; Curtis led the girls with 18 points.

In 3A boys' action, North Central led with 18 points. Tied with 10 points each in girls' 3A competition were Hanford, Seattle Prep, Union and Shorecrest.

W.F. West and Ellensburg were tied for the boy's lead in 2A, each with 10 points.

On the girls' side, Hockinson led team standings with 14 points. Competition continues today.
