North Central Track Stars Bring In Winning Tradition

SPOKANE, Wash. - It was 1970, the last time North Central High School brought home a boys state championship. That is until these three got involved.

Andrew Kimpel, Leon Dean and Ben Johnston have helped win three cross country and one state track championship during their time at North Central, including a national championship in cross country this fall. But they're more excited about bringing wins back to the community.

The distance runners have become quasi rock stars around North Central. One classroom whiteboard has become "The Wall of Kimpel," as students have taken to jokingly jotting down feats of speed their state champion can acheive, but with all the success the boys are quick to give credit where credit is due.

But even with years of rebuilding, it still comes down to the athletes and these three have brought a new attitude to a school that, before them, had just two state championships since 1948.
