Gonzaga's Fields harvests All-America honors

Gonzaga pitcher Matt Fields joined exclusive Bulldog company Thursday when Collegiate Baseball named him to the Louisville Slugger TPX All-America third team.

Fields, the 2009 West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Year and All-WCC selection is just the seventh Zag to ever earn All-America honors.  He's the Bulldog to receive such an award since Clayton Mortenson earned the same recognition in 2007.

The senior right-handed pitcher from Lake Stevens, Wash. finished the regular season second in the WCC in ERA (2.86) and in wins ((8), while also leading Gonzaga in strikeouts (73).  He finished the season with an 8-1 win-loss record, including 7-0 in the West Coast Conference. He fired complete-game victories in two of his final three starts, earning the win in all three starts, to lead the Zags to their first WCC Regular season and WCC Championship Series titles in school history.

Fields is scheduled to start for the Zags in the NCAA Tournament game against Georgia Southern on Friday.  First pitch is at 3 p.m. at the Fullerton Regional in Fullerton, California.
