W. Valley Rams credit coach, effort for state title run

YAKIMA, Wash. - The West valley soccer team is two wins away from a 3A State Championship.  Friday they face Franklin Pierce in Lakewood for the State semi-final.

This weekend will mark the Rams' first trip to the final four in the last eight years.  They're led by Player of the year Junior Ayala, who has scored 27 goals this year.  That breaks the school record owned by coach and former Ram player Jake Sagare, who was also this year's Coach of the Year in Rams' league.

"We work hard, obviously," said Ayala.  "And we have a good coach, and a lot of people helping us out, too - not just Jake.  We have a lot of his friends coming out, so that helps."

Sagare, who played at the University of Washington, Seattle Sounders FC, Portland Timbers, and a couple of teams in England, attributes his team's success to a winning attitude.

"It's gotten us this far, and it's going to get us further," said Sagare he said of his team's attitude.  "If we come out with the attitude that we're confident in our abilities, but realize that we have to work hard to do it..."

"Everything is different than last year," said goalie Phil Lopez. "Even conditioning has been a lot tougher, practices have been more intense, and we're progressing from that."

The Rams' ultimate goal is to win a state title, and they're willing to put the work in to achieve it.  The last time they took the top prize was in 1998 when Sagare was a senior on the team.
