Dream season isn't over yet for ambitious Bulldogs

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - It's been a dream season of sorts for the Gonzaga baseball team.  They find themselves on the brink of doing something that hasn't been done at GU in nearly three decades: play in the NCAA Regionals.

The Bulldogs went 14-6 in the West Coast Conference this season, winning the regular season title.  That alone has become a dream come true to head coach Mark Machtolf.

"I knew we had a good veteran group coming back and some great leadership," said Machtolf.  "We're always hopeful we can play for a championship, and these guys have done a great job."

With the regular season behind them, now the Zags turn their attention to the weekend.  The boys in blue host Loyola Marymount in the WCC Championship Series beginning on Friday.  Two wins would give the Zags a berth into the NCAA Regionals, something that no Bulldog team has done since 1981.  To put that in perspective, that was before any of the current Zag players were born.

"We had an opportunity two years ago," explained outfielder Matt Fields. "We were in the championship series, went down to San Diego.  We won the first game, lost the next two and just missed out on the Regionals."

"We're pretty hungry for it," added Fields.  "We want to get there and make some noise."

"It would be awesome to be part of the that team that goes that far.  I'm just happy to be here playing for this team and having fun," said catcher Tyson Van Winkle.

Playing deep into the postseason is a dream many of the Bulldogs have held since the days of waffle ball as a kid.  And their coach is just as excited.

"It would be huge," said Machtolf.  "That's what we always shoot for and I think we're right there.  Hopefully we'll finish this off."
