Mariners' pitchers allow 3 hits, beat Angels 1-0

Posted: Updated:

SEATTLE - Right-hander Chris Jakubauskas and three relievers combined to pitch a three-hitter as the Seattle Mariners edged the Los Angeles Angels 1-0 last night at Safeco Field.

The 19 and 22 Mariners will start left-hander Erik Bedard (2-1, 2.53) against the 20 and 19 Angels' left-hander Joe Saunders (5-2. 3.59) at 7:10 tonight in the finale of a four-game series. Bedard missed his last start because of a hamstring injury.

Last night Jakubauskas (3-4) limited the Angels to two hits in six innings. Miguel Batista, Mark Lowe and David Ardsmore each pitched one scoreless inning, with Ardsmore recording his fifth save in five opportunities with a hitless ninth.

The offensively challenged Mariners got all the offense they needed in the opening inning. Ken Griffey Jr. had two of their two hits, including an RBI single after Ichiro Suzuki doubled leading off the first against Ervin Santana (0-1).

The Mariners won for just the fourth time in 16 games, and for the first time in eight games against an AL West rival.
