Whitworth Sends Eight to NCAA T&F Championships


SPOKANE, Wash. - Led by a pair of defending national champions, Whitworth University will send seven men and one woman to the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships this week (May 21-23) at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio.

The Pirate men hope to post a performance much like last season's third place finish, the highest-ever for Whitworth as a member of the NCAA.

Cody Stelzer (Jr., The Dalles, Oregon) is the defending champion in the high jump. He heads into the meet with a season-best mark of 6'-10.25". Emmanuel Bofa (Jr., Puyallup, Wash.) is the defending champion in the 800 meter run. He enters the meet with a school-record entry mark of 1:49.93, one of three athletes with a time under 1:50.00.

Jeff Kintner (Jr., Wenatchee, Wash.), who finished fourth in the nation last spring, leads three Pirates qualified in the shot put. His entry mark of 55'-5.75" is the third-best in the event. Danjuma Quarless (Jr., Seattle, Wash.) is seventh with a mark of 53'-8.25", while Michael Nahl (Jr., West Seattle, Wash.) is 9th with a throw of 53'-3".

Two other Pirate men with throw the javelin. Joey VanHoomissen (Sr., Renton, Wash.) returns to the meet with a mark of 201'-1" (11th), while Alex Hymel (So., Damascus, Ore.) enters with a throw of 200'-7" (12th). Hymel finished 8th in the event as a freshman.

Elizabeth Mattila (So., Ferndale, Wash.) will be making her second straight nationals appearance in the 400 meter hurdles. Her entry time of 1:02.25 ranks 8th in the meet.
