BOISE, Idaho - Lawmakers in Idaho are considering a bill allowing the state Board of Education to temporarily shield some of its highest paid and most prized employees from paying income taxes on a portion of their salaries.

The Senate Finance Committee approved legislation on Wednesday to allow the board to offer deferred compensation packages to certain employees at Idaho's four-year public universities.

Board executive director Mike Rush says the bill would help recruit high-profile employees such as school presidents and coaches, who could use the retirement plans to delay a percentage of their earnings and the taxes on those earnings.

The board concedes the state could temporarily lose some income tax revenues, and these employees could leave the state after they retire without paying income taxes on the earnings in Idaho. But Rush says these employees could also be hired at a lower cost and attract donors and research that could potentially yield millions for the state.
