SPOKANE, Wash. - No. 22 Gonzaga University pounded out 23 hits to record a 17-6 win over visiting Washington State University at the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs (22-10) overcame a 4-1 third inning deficit by putting up five runs in the third inning, two in the fourth and seven in the fifth to post its season-high of 17 runs. Tyson Van Winkle produced a career-high 5-for-5 six RBI night to lead the Zags who had seven players finish with multiple-hits. Mark Castellitto went 4-for-5, drove in four runs and hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season. The top four Bulldog hitters in the lineup combined to score nine runs and also drive in nine as Gonzaga ended a three-game losing skid to the Cougars (15-16).

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom half of the first inning. Evan Wells led off the inning with an infield single to shortstop and later stole second base to move into scoring position. Van Winkle came through for the Zags with a one-out RBI base-hit to right center to bring Wells across.

WSU used the long ball to put up their four runs in the third inning. Matt Fanelli hit a two-run home run to center before Alex Burg and Greg Lagried followed with back-to-back solo shots to take a 4-1 lead.

The Gonzaga bats responded in a big way, exploding for 13 runs over the next three innings.

Castellitto highlighted the third inning with his opposite field three-run shot over the right field fence. Van Winkle and Wiegand provided the scoring the fourth inning as Van Winkle's RBI single through the left side brought home the innings first run. Wiegand followed with a double into the right field corner and as the throw went into second Van Winkle ran home to score and make it 8-4 Zags.

In the fifth inning the Bulldogs used seven hits to score seven runs as they sent 10 men to the plate to build their lead to 15-4. Gonzaga received an RBI base-hit from Jason Chatwood, a two-run triple from drew Heid, a Van Winkle RBI double and back-to-back RBI doubles from Anthony Synegal and Castellitto to put the game out of reach.

Van Winkle added an RBI in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and drove in another in the eighth on his fifth hit of the game to cap the scoring at 17-6.

Reedy Berg picked up the win, striking out four over five innings to improve to 2-2. Ryan Carpenter and Cody Martin combined to allow just two hits and strike out seven over the final four innings to preserve the win.

Gonzaga resumes West Coast Conference play this weekend at the University of Portland Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
