Eagles backup safety likely out for season

CHENEY, Wash. - Eastern Washington backup safety Will Edge will likely miss the entire 2009 season after suffering a dislocated left ankle and a broken fibula in Saturday's spring football scrimmage.

The team ran about 35 plays on Saturday, and then ended the practice early when Edge got hurt.  He had surgery on Sunday, but coach Beau Baldwin said pins used to repair the injury won't be taken out until August and it could take up to a year before Edge is able to play again.

Edge, a junior from Tacoma, Washington, lettered the past two seasons as a backup free safety and strong safety.

Eastern will have a full scrimmage on April 18 at 12:30 p.m. before playing the annual Red-White game on April 25 at Woodward Field.  Spring practice ends on April 30.
