SPOKANE, Wash. - Go ahead.  Make some noise at Saturday's Shock game at Spokane Arena.  Just leave your most annoying noisemaker at home.  The team sent out an email to fans on Thursday saying cowbells, air horns and the like would no longer be allowed during games.

The new policy goes into effect beginning Friday, which means things could be a little less noisy for the team's rivalry game against Tri-Cities.  Included in the ban:

  • Cowbells
  • Electric/Electronic noisemakers (i.e. sirens)
  • Compressed air horns
  • Whistles
  • Cymbals
  • Drums (or other instruments)

Team spokesman Kevin Maloney said other noisemakers are okay to bring, but the team reserves the right to add to the list of banned items if it sees fit.  Anyone caught using a banned noisemaker would be asked to stop using it.  After that, security has full permission to take it away for the rest of the game.

"We recognize that many of our most enthusiastic fans enjoy making noise to support the team and to ‘get into the game'," said the email.  It went on to say, "Many of our fans are young children, senior citizens, and persons with hearing issues.  For these people and many others, sitting next to a fan that makes excessive noise can cause a serious issue with their enjoyment of the game."

Maloney said numerous fans have contacted the team's offices over the years to complain about the excessive use of noisemakers.
