MINNEAPOLIS - After a 6-5 defeat last night, the Seattle Mariners will try to salvage a split in their opening-season four-game road series today when they face the Minnesota Twins at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Justin Morneau homered and drove in three runs and Denard Span hit a two-run homer as the Twins edged the Mariners in an ominous first start for Mariners right-hander Carlos Silva, a 15-game loser in 2008.

Russell Branyan and Jose Lopez hit long home runs and Yuniesky Betancourt went 3-for-4 for the Mariners , but they lost by one run in Minnesota for the second straight night after taking their season opener against the Twins 6-1 Monday night.

In the second season of a $48 million, four-year free agent contract, Silva absorbed his 16th defeat in 20 decisions in a Mariners uniform. Silva pitched five innings, giving up six runs and eight hits.

This morning at 10:10, the Mariners will start veteran left-hander Jarrod Washburn against Twins left-hander Glen Perkins. Washburn had a 5-14 record with the Mariners last season.
