Mariners put Ichiro on DL with bleeding ulcer

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Seattle Mariners have placed star outfielder Ichiro Suzuki on the 15-day disabled list because of a bleeding ulcer.

Doctors diagnosed him in Arizona after he complained of severe fatigue and missed three straight games in spring training.

The team says the ulcer is no longer bleeding, but doctors have restricted his activity.

The move is retroactive to March 31, meaning Suzuki won't be eligible to come off the disabled list until April 15.

Ichiro did not travel with the team to Las Vegas for the games against Colorado tonight and Saturday. He will not accompanying the team to Minnesota for Monday's season opener.

Since arriving in Seattle in 2001, Ichiro has missed just 16 games. He had played in 197 consecutive games.

Ichiro didn't arrive at Mariners spring training until March 26, after leading Japan to a second consecutive World Baseball Classic title. He had the game winning single in the tenth inning of the championship game against Korea.

In spring training at-bats, Suzuki went 5-for-12.
