Zags, Utes combine for 33 hits in rain-soaked game

SPOKANE, Wash. - With 33 hits in a baseball game, you can bet the score would be pretty impressive.  Such was the case Tuesday night, as the Utah Utes beat Gonzaga 16-9 at the Patterson Baseball Complex in Spokane.

The Utes snapped the Bulldogs' eight-game winning streak, making their record 14-6 on the season.

A 20-minute rain delay caused the game to go long - more than four hours.  By the time it was over, the teams combined for 33 hits, 25 runs, 16 walks and seven errors.  A total of nine different pitchers were used during the game.

Gonzaga junior centerfielder Drew Heid finished with four hits and 3 RBI, while senior second baseman Evan Wells had two hits, drove in a run and scored four times.  The Bulldogs' starting pitcher, Reedy Berg (0-2) took the loss after allowing four earned runs on nine hits.  He did, however, finish with a career-high seven strikeouts in four innings.

The Bulldogs wrap up a nine-game homestand against Utah Wednesday at noon.
