Saint Mary's, which finished second behind Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference, was snubbed by the NCAA selection committee. The Galloping Gaels were kicked off the road to the Final Four in 2009, even though Patty Mills, who missed five weeks of the season because of an injury, had returned to the starting lineup.
Saint Mary's scheduled an extra game between the end of the WCC tournament and Selection Sunday to show the committee how good they can be with their star player on the court. Despite pounding Eastern Washington in that desperation game, the Gaels were forced to watch from outside the ballroom, and were instead extended an invitation to play in the NIT - an offer they begrudgingly accepted.
