SALT LAKE CITY – Matt Richardson’s RBI single to right field in the seventh inning Friday snapped a 1-all tie and Utah held on to defeat Washington State 2-1 in the middle game of a three-game Pac-12 baseball series at Smith’s Ballpark.

The Utes (14-32, 6-23) began their winning rally when Chase Fernlund and Briley Knight singled in the seventh off WSU starter A.J. Block (0-8). After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, Fernlund scored on Chandler Anderson’s sacrifice fly and Richardson singled home Knight.

Block pitched a career-high 6 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out seven.

Danny Sinatro of the Cougars (10-39-1, 2-23-1) extended his hitting streak to eight games. Jack Smith’s sacrifice fly in the fourth scored Dillon Plew for WSU’s lone run.

Utah reliever Austin Moore (1-0) worked five innings, allowing two hits and no earned runs.

The series concludes Saturday.
