College baseball: Whitworth moves into first-place tie; WSU falls to No. 22 UC Irvine

Ryan Kingma threw eight scoreless innings and Whitworth pounded out 18 hits in a 12-0 win over George Fox in Spokane on Sunday that boosted the Pirates into a first-place tie in the Northwest Conference.

Liam Fitzpatrick and Jaxson Sweum had three hits each for the Pirates (12-10, 9-3) and Tyler Poppenroth, Cody Simmons and Casey Isa two apiece. Simmons and Lukas Seeley each had two RBIs.

Kingma (5-2) gave up two hits and three walks while striking out five. Jake Briones pitched the ninth to complete the shutout of the Bruins (15-8, 11-4), the first time George Fox has been blanked this season.

The Pirates are tied atop the NWC with Pacific.

UC Irvine 8, Washington State 4: Brandon Lewis slugged a pair of home runs and the No. 22 Anteaters (15-4) completed a weekend sweep of the Cougars (6-16) with a victory in Irvine, California.

Lewis drove in five runs including a three-run shot in the fifth for a 6-3 lead in the fifth.

Rob Teel and Andres Alvarez had two hits each for the Cougars while Zane Ross (1-2), the second of five WSU pitchers, took the loss.
