College baseball: Pepperdine shuts down Gonzaga

Easton Lucas threw a complete game, allowing one run on five hits, and Pepperdine defeated Gonzaga 3-1 Saturday in Malibu, California.

Quincy McAfee went 3 for 4 with a run as the Waves (12-7, 4-1 West Coast Conference) won their second straight in the series.

Michael Spellacy yielded one run in five innings in relief for the Bulldogs (8-11, 2-3). Guthrie Morrison singled in Nick Nyquist in the second for GU’s lone run.

UC Irvine 5, Washington State 1: Brendan Brooks singled in two runs in the sixth inning, and the Anteaters (14-4) defeated the Cougars (6-15) in nonconference play in Irvine, California.

Kodie Kolden went 2 for 4, including a homer in the fifth for WSU. Rob Teel also had two hits.

Whitworth 3-4, George Fox 1-5: Cody Simmons hit the go-ahead home run in the fifth inning, and the Pirates won the first game at Merkel Field.

Austin Rice (2-1) allowed one run on four hits in six innings.

In the second game, Chase Fetzer homered in the sixth as the Bruins (15-7, 11-3 Northwest Conference) edged Whitworth (11-10, 8-3).
