Jenele Peterson scored 19 points to go with five assists and Whitman (14-10, 8-7) avenged an earlier Northwest Conference loss to Whitworth (11-13, 7-8), winning 74-61 in women’s basketball Tuesday at Walla Walla.
The Missionaries held the Pirates to 18 points on 28.6 percent shooting in the opening half, building a 17-point lead at the break.
Whitworth cut its deficit from 27 to 11 in the second half, getting 15 points and six rebounds off the bench from Kayla Johnson.
Jessica Howe shot an 8-over-par 80 on the third and final day, finishing in 10th place with a score of 232 to lead Gonzaga at The Gold Rush tournament in Yorba Linda, Calif.
The Bulldogs finished sixth in the team scoring, with two players finishing in the top 15. Submitting the best round of the day for the Zags was Ta Jade Kliebphipat (3-over, 75) who moved into 13th place.
Earning medalist honors was Simone Hoey, who scored a three-day total of 219 to lead Long Beach State. San Diego State won the team title with a score of 918.

Jesse Knowler scored a 2-on-1 goal in overtime to lift Castlegar (42-8) to a 7-6 win over the Spokane Braves (21-26), pushing its lead in the best-of-7 playoff series to 2-0 in KIJHL first-round action in Castlegar, B.C.
Ryan Aynsley scored three goals to lead the Rebels, while Guiseppe Dippolitto had two to lead the Braves.
The teams will resume the series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Spokane.
Idaho head coach Robb Akey announced the addition of Spokane native John McDonell as Vandals offensive line coach.
McDonell graduated from Gonzaga Prep and was an NAIA All-American at Carroll College in Helena.
McDonell’s coaching career began at Weber State (1984-88) before stops at Washington State (1989-2000), Stanford (2001, 2005), Notre Dame (2002-04), Purdue (2006-08), Bowling Green (2009) and Memphis (2010).
“It’s an outstanding opportunity for me and my family,” McDonell said. “We’re from the West. We wanted to get back out this way.”
