And then came something much bigger. The 2007 graduate of Roseburg High School in Oregon found out Monday afternoon she'd been named the conference's Most Valuable Player for the 2009-1010 season.
Piper became the first Eastern Washington player in league history to win the MVP award. The junior was a unanimous selection to the first team. The other unanimous selection was Idaho State's Oana Iacovita.
Montana State's Sarah Strand and EWU's Brianne Ryan were selected as Co-Defensive Players of the Year. Northern Arizona's Amy Patton was a unanimous selection for Freshman of the Year, while teammate Vickie Toney was named Newcomer of the Year.
Piper, a 6'1" forward, averaged 12.1 points per game overall and 12.6 in league play and helped the Eagles to the first-ever outright regular season conference title. She is third in the Big Sky with 7.8 rebounds per game and leads the league in offensive rebounds. She's fourth in field goal percentage (.469).
Piper helped Eastern finish the season 19-10 overall and 12-4 in the Big Sky.

Eastern Washington, the tournament host and regular season Big Sky Conference champion, will play Friday (March 12) at 6 p.m. against the lowest remaining seed (Montana State if it wins, or the winner of the PSU vs. ISU game if Sac State is victorious).
