Whitworth Takes Rubber Game at Menlo

Posted: Updated:

ATHERTON, Calif. - Kyle Krustangel homered twice and Nathan Johnson threw a complete game to lead visiting Whitworth to an 8-4 win at Menlo in the rubber game of a non-conference baseball series on Sunday afternoon.

The Pirates improved to 3-10 on the season while the Oakes fell to 6-8.

Krustangel led off the second with his second homer of the season and JR Jarrell followed with a two-run shot two batters later. Nick Ashley doubled home another run to complete the four-run rally.

Whitworth added an unearned run in the third before Menlo rallied in the bottom of the fifth for three runs on a two-run homer by Shane Parsons and a solo shot by Chris Mazza.

But Johnson settled down after that, allowing only another solo shot by Parsons in the bottom of the seventh.

Dan Belet had given the Bucs two more runs with a double in the top of the seventh. Whitworth scored its final run of the game on Krustangel's second homer of the contest in the top of the ninth.

Krustangel and Belet each finished with three hits for the Bucs.

Johnson allowed four runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits. He struck out three and walked one to improve to 1-2 on the season.

Whitworth will open Northwest Conference play next weekend with a three game series at Puget Sound.
