The No. 4 Whitworth Pirates will make their fifth postsason appearance and will be given one of just three first round byes in the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament this week.

The Pirates will host a second round game on Saturday night against the winner of Thursday's first round game between Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Chapman. The Bucs earned the Northwest Conference's automatic bid to the national tournament by winning the NWC tournament final against George Fox last weekend.

"We have the longest winning streak in the nation of any Division I, II or III school, so to get rewarded - to have that hard work recognized and validated by the NCAA committee - thanks for getting it right, guys," said coach Jim Hayford with a big smile.

Whitworth is riding a 24-game winning streak.

Dave Riley: Each of us – for two years – have been able to host a first round game," explained NWC Player of the Year Dave Riley. "This year we came in with high expectations, so this is something we've been working for all year."

The Bucs became just the second NWC team to finish the conference schedule 16-0. The University of Puget Sound did the same thing last year. In fact, Whitworth lost to Puget Sound last year in the second round of the tournament…. after beating Claremont-M-S in the first round.
