Former Washington State quarterback Ryan Leaf faces the possibility of up to 36 years in prison after being indicted on drug and burglary charges in Texas.
The indictment, handed up by a grand jury in Canyon, Texas, alleges the 33-year-old former quarterback broke into one of his former player's apartment and stole his Hydrocodone. The player had been prescribed the painkiller because of an injury.
"We began an in-depth, extensive investigation into his obtaining of any of this kind of medication, and when we did so, we found out there was fraud involved," said Lt. Dale Davis with the Canyon Police Department.
Leaf used to coach quarterbacks at West Texas A&M before he resigned last November. He also worked as the school's golf coach.
James Farren, criminal district attorney for Randall County in Texas, said Leaf has been undergoing drug rehabilitation at a facility in British Columbia. He told the Amarillo Globe-News that his office was trying to convince Leaf to return to the United States on his own.
Leaf led the Washington State to a Pac-10 Conference Championship and Rose Bowl appearance. The San Diego Chargers made him the second pick of the NFL draft in 1998. He played with the Chargers until 2000, and then with the Dallas Cowboys in 2001. He threw for 3,666 yards and 14 touchdowns during his professional career.
