Macek Nets Hat Trick in Wild 6-5 Americans Win

Posted: Updated:

EVERETT, Wash. -- Brooks Macek recorded a hat trick and Adam Hughesman capped a wild third period to lead the Tri-City Americans (2-0) past the host Everett Silvertips (1-1) 6-5 in Day 2 of the Everett Silvertips Pre-Season Classic, presented by Holiday Inn – Downtown Everett.

With the previous two games on Saturday needing to be decided in overtime,  the night cap certainly didn't appear headed in that direction to start.  Just 1:42 into the contest and via the power play, Everett's Scott MacDonald notched his first of two goals on the night.  Then, just past the midway point of the period, Markus McCrea put the ‘Tips up 2-0, a lead that would hold headed into the first intermission.

However, in the second period, Tri-City started to find some success on Everett netminder Thomas Heemskerk.  Less than five minutes into the second period, Macek collected his first goal to get Tri-City on the board.  Just 1:41 later, Tyler Schmidt registered an unassisted, short-handed goal, knotting the game at 2.  At the 12:42 mark of the period, and on the power play, Kruise Reddick picked up his first goal of the post-season, while giving the Americans their first lead in the in contest.  Then, just eight seconds later, Macek put Tri-City up 4-2.

As if the first 40 minutes weren't crazy enough, the final 20 minutes of play were anything but tame.  Newly acquired forward Landon Ferraro got the ‘Tips to within one just 1:40 into the period.  Still trailing with 7:38 remaining, MacDonald used his second goal to tie the game at 4.

But, with 5:49 left in regulation, and on the power play, Macek completed his hat trick to put the Americans back on top by one.  However, Everett converted a late power play opportunity, as Tyler Maxwell connected with 1:00 remaining.  Seemingly headed for overtime, Hughesman shocked the crowd at Comcast Arena by scoring with 38 seconds remaining in regulation, and the Americans held on for the win.

Drew Owsley played the entire game in net for Tri-City, collecting 24 saves on 29 shots.  Meanwhile, in the Everett net, Heemskerk stopped 18 of the 22 shots he faced in 40 minutes of play, while Luke Siemens worked the third period, notching 17 saves on 19 shots.

Earlier Day 2 action at the Pre-Season Classic saw the Spokane Chiefs knock off the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-3 (OT), while the Portland Winterhawks scored five unanswered goals to come back and beat the Ontario Hockey League's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 6-5 (OT).  Tomorrow, the Americans will wrap-up their portion of the tournament with a 3:00 p.m. game against the Greyhounds at Comcast Arena.
