*Clarification: Tiffany Brooks became the first position player on a team for the first time in 50 years. Ila Borders played in the Western League and the Northern League as a pitcher. Eri Yoshida, also a pitcher, signed with the Chico Outlaws of the Golden Baseball League in April of this year.

Spokane native Tiffany Brooks made sporting history Wednesday by becoming the first woman to make the roster of a professional baseball team in more than 50 years.

Brooks tried out for the Big Bend Cowboys from Alpine, Texas and found out on Wednesday she'd made the team. She's set to make her professional debut Thursday night, playing either first base or pitching. Or both. She reportedly throws an 82-mile-an-hour fastball.

"She hustles, she has some good defensive plays and we're looking forward," team president Bob Ward told CBS TV affiliate in Odessa, Texas. "We said 'why not? Let's give her a shot.'"

Brooks played softball at Gonzaga before playing baseball in the Arizona Winter League, a short-season training league.
