
(Photo: File / Whitworth Athletics)LOS ANGELES - JR Jarrell hit a game-winning three-run home run in the final inning and Kyle Krustangel added an insurance homer to lift visiting Whitworth University to a 7-5 victory in the nightcap of a non-conference baseball doubleheader at Occidental College, giving the Pirates their first win of the season. The host Tigers came from behind to win the opener 9-6.
Whitworth took a 3-0 lead through three innings in the second game after Krustangel singled home runs in both the first and third innings. After Occidental came back to tie the game in the fourth, the contest remained tied until Jarrell delivered his home run in the top of the seventh with one out. Krustangel's homer came on the next at-bat for his third RBI of the day.
The Tigers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh against eventual winning pitcher Ben George, but James King induced a fly out to left with the potential tying runs on base to pick up his first save of the season.
The Pirates grabbed a 5-0 lead through four innings in the opener, but Occidental rallied for the 9-6 win. Landon Scott hit a two-run homer for Whitworth in the three-run third inning.
The Bucs will return to action in two weeks when they play a double-header at Northwest Nazarene on Friday, Feb. 19
