The Shadle Park Highlanders ended a three-year drought in the "Groovy Shoes" rivalry with North Central Thursday night at Spokane Veterans Arena. The Highlanders got off on the right foot with a 48-35 win in the girls basketball game, followed by a blowout win in the boys game, 61-38. The biggest celebration came just moments after the conclusion of the second game, when the Highlanders were presented the coveted shoes, awarded to the school with the most spirit during the doubleheader.
The Highlander girls set the tone from the start, beginning the game on a 7-0 run before weathering an 8-0 run by the Indians. Chelsea Chandler led Shadle with a team-high 12 points while Tara Van Weerdhuizen scored 12 for NC.
The boys game was never in question as the Highlanders stormed out to a 16-4 first quarter lead. Shadle Park never looked back, getting a game-high 21 points from senior guard Robbie Douglas to notch their 10th conference win in GSL play.
