Fever abandon AF1 for Indoor Football League

AF1 makes bid for AFL name and logos

As it turns out, The Tri-Cities Fever won’t be playing in the AF1 league after all.  Spokane’s biggest rival decided to forego joining the second tier of the new indoor football league, and instead opted to join the IFL – the Indoor Football League.

The owner and general manager of the Fever, Teri Carr, said Thursday there arena’t enough teams to make a second tier work in AF1, so the team had to explore other options.

Kentucky was the first team to drop out after the AF1 scrapped the second tier plan.  Arkansas followed suit.  It’s unclear what will happen to the remaining teams that would have been in Tier 2: Oklahoma City, Bossier-Shreveport, Tennessee Valley and Central Valley.

And just when you were getting used to the new “Arena Football 1” name and logo, news came Thursday it could go away just as fast as it came.  The owners of the new league, including Spokane Shock owner Brady Nelson, submitted a $2.5 million bid to the creditors of the bankrupt Arena Football League for the rights to that league’s team logos and AFL name.

The bid is believed to be the only one so far.

“The assets have little or no inherent value unless you are willing to invest in the capital necessary to develop and use those assets in an ongoing business,” said Dan Newman, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Arena Football 1, in a news release.

Newman said the league is committed to playing the 2010 season under the AF1 banner.
