SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga's Micah Downs will play for the Phoenix Suns' summer league team, said a team spokesman on Wednesday.
Exactly how he fits into the Suns' plans is still up in the air, as the team didn't expect to make the official announcement about its summer roster until sometime Wednesday afternoon. Games start July 10 in Las Vegas and run through the 19th, giving teams an opportunity to get another look at players who might or might not fill a spot on their regular-season rosters.
Downs, who went unselected during the NBA draft in June, began his collegiate career at Kansas and then decided to transfer to Gonzaga after his freshman season. He sat out a year due to NCAA rules and used up all his eligibility last season with the Zags.
The 6'7" small forward from Bothell, Wash. worked out with eight different teams before the draft and impressed scouts with his long wingspan, dunking ability and mid-range game. While it was expected he wouldn't be drafted, many thought Downs would get a shot at the NBA on the free agent market.
"My heart is set on the NBA, I want to make a career out of playing in the NBA, but if I have to take a detour to the European league that might be what has to happen," he told the Spokesman-Review the day before the draft. "I've been playing basketball ever since I can remember walking."
Last season Downs averaged almost 10 points per game, shooting 47 percent from the field.
