SPOKANE, Wash. - And the winner is... Gonzaga baseball coach Mark Machtolf.  The West Coast Conference named the 6th-year coach its Coach of the Year after he led the Zags to a WCC regular season title this season.

Machtolf, who has a total of 19 seasons with Gonzaga, coached the Zags to the 30-win plateau for a third consecutive season.  This year's team beat No. 10 Missouri twice, No. 26 Pepperdine twice and No. 21 San Diego twice.  He helped his team earn its first national ranking since 2006 (No. 22 by Baseball America in mid-April).

Gonzaga enters this weekend's WCC Championship Series with the second highest winning percentage (.557) and the third highest win total in school history (177).

Of course, it helped to have an all-conference pitcher on your team.  The WCC named Gonzaga pitcher Matt Fields its Pitcher of the Year - only the second Bulldog to ever earn the award.  Clayton Mortensen won the honor in 2007.

Fields ended the regular season 7-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play.  He also finished the season second in both overall ERA (2.85) and in conference games only ERA (2.81).  He led the Zags with 66 strikeouts.

Along with Fields, Anthony Synegal, Ryan Weigland, and Tyson Van Winkle were placed on the all-WCC team.  Steven Ames received All-WCC honorable mention.

Player of the Year: James Meador, San Diego
Pitcher of the Year: Matt Fields, Gonzaga
Freshman of the Year: Troy Channing, Saint Mary's
Defensive Player of the Year: Denny Duron, Pepperdine
Coach of the Year: Mark Machtolf, Gonzaga
